Picture gallery Tower Hamlets photography exhibition

An exhibition of digital photographs by six students from Tower Hamlets College is now on display at the Chrisp Street Idea Store, E14.

The collection, depicting everyday life in Tower Hamlets, is drawn from the coursework of the students who have completed a pre-entry course in digital photography. The students were encouraged to use the themes for their work from a recent exhibition of influential English photographer Bill Brandt held at the V&A museum.

The aim of the 10-week course was to motivate underachieving students, many of whom were not in education, employment or training. Course manager, Nikki Collier, said: "It has been a difficult process and getting these young people proactively engaged has been challenging, but the outcome has been fantastic. This project can really work in re-engaging young people in education."

The exhibition, sponsored by learndirect advice, will run until July 30. Entry is free.

This photo is one of my classmates and represents who he is. Just because he wears a hood does not make him a bad person. But a photo like this one with certain lighting and shading can make someone look bad.

Based on the Bill Brandt theme, our tutor asked us to look at an image that included social interaction and imagination. This is why I have a picture of the market at Chrisp Street. I believe it shows a funny look into social surroundings. It's also very colourful which the local people are.

This photo is of a memorial in Polar park to 17 children killed during the first world war. In this image I have tried to capture how the statue soars, and is part of the local skyline. However its impact is dwarfed by the plane in the background.

This picture was taken on East India Dock Road. The police are out of focus and the background showing depth of field which is something that we learnt. People have asked me did I mean to make the police out of focus but I didn't. The end result I think is quite humorous because the police are blurred.

This photo is to show that the simplest of images can create feeling. We were asked to look at the local area in detail and portray a sense of imagination. We also had to show our technical knowledge for lighting. This image captures both imagination and contrast lighting in its lines and shadows.

I really like this photograph because I have been able to get me in the photo as well. I think it shows the true feeling in the Chrisp Street marketplace in east London. The different cultures coming together in the one place.

This image was based on the actual themes of Bill Brandt's photos. We learnt to do this in a studio with lights. We had one day to experiment with lighting and shadows on the human form, to give us experience of portraiture.

We were asked to look at how Bill Brandt chooses his compositions and one of the themes he used was about social class. This photo represents the divide between rich and poor, with the skyline of Canary Wharf and its multinational banks and finance companies lurking over the deprivation of Poplar.

This image is to show that the simplest of images can make us look for the story in the photo. James, our tutor talked about the concept of composition and our social surroundings. Hopefully it has captured all these things.
